"Just For Today" -The Reiki Precepts

1. Just for today be grateful.

“To feel gratitude is to be thankful for all of the circumstances in your life". It’s easy to be thankful for waking up everyday, special moments with friends and family, or money in your bank account. But what about when things don’t go as planned? When hopes and dreams don’t turn out as you expected? Life challenges help you grow. Practicing gratitude during these times benefits you and those around you. When you focus on the ‘feeling of gratitude’ there’s a peace that comes, even in times of tribulation -that’s when physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual healing begins to take place.”

2. Just for today let go of worry.

"Worrying" about what has occurred in the past is not helpful and can lead to shame and regret. You tend to do what you know to be best at any given moment. "when you know better, you do better" -Maya Angelou. "Worrying" about the future is equally futile because it’s unknown. Instead, put action into places where the uncertainty lies. Preparedness is the key to success, not luck, and not fretting or worrying. The constant worry takes your attention from the present moment and creates bodily tension and a weaker immune system. Breathing deeply into your lower abdomen is an excellent way to manage worry. This breathing technique helps you to return to the present moment and relaxes your central nervous system. Your breathe is always with you, so this can be practiced anywhere and at any time.

3. Just for today let go of anger.

You may experience anger when you feel you have little or no control over situations that take place in your life. You may also feel angry at how other people behave. Find peace in knowing you can’t control every situation, other people’s behavior, or outcomes. Practicing Reiki may help you to manage the feelings of anger. Breathe in peace, exhale love. Moments, when anger appears, can be viewed as opportunities for you to practice patience, tolerance, and acceptance.

Anger, like worry, can serve a valuable purpose. Anger helps you to set a boundary for what you think is acceptable behavior toward yourself and others. Breathe in peace, exhale love. Your breathe is always with you, so this can be practiced anywhere and at any time.

4. Just for today work honestly.

This principle reminds us to always move with integrity. It’s how you behave even when you think no one is watching. When you are true to yourself, you clear out unnecessary inner and outer confusion. If you are being dishonest in any way, things don’t flow smoothly, you may feel frustration and anger. Arriving where you want to be is more challenging and takes longer.

Hands-on Reiki connects you deeply with yourself and something greater than yourself that you are a part of. When you have a difficult decision to make practice self Reiki. The practice helps guide you to make decisions that are best for yourself and others.

5. Just for today be kind.

Here you are reminded not to cause unnecessary harm to other living things (all people, food, plants, and animals), and to be considerate of your surroundings. We all have different ideas, likes, dislikes, and beliefs -based on our individual morals, values, and learned perceptions. Ask yourself, what are the needs, objectives, and challenges of this person, or how our lives intersect? Having an understanding of these concepts helps to build compassion and acceptance for those around you -ultimately, increasing your overall health and wellbeing (mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual).

Kindness includes being kind to yourself. Practicing hands-on Reiki daily is a simple way to be kind to yourself. It’s a wonderful self-care practice. If you practice in the morning it will help you to better manage challenging situations throughout the day.
